Acts 2
The Holy Spirit was introduced by Jesus to the disciples in the upper room on passover, just prior to His death. We are very familiar with the Holy Spirit as the one who was sent to be our helper, teacher, comforter, and guide. However, He fulfills a much bigger purpose in the earth. Here is a great example from John 16.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Jesus states in verse 8 that when He (The Holy Spirit) has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Notice that Jesus said sin - singular, not sins - plural. What was the sin of the world that the Holy Spirit would convict people of? Verse 9 tells us. It reads "because they do not believe in me." So Jesus is being very clear here. The Holy Spirit is not being sent to point out every sin you commit and then convict you of each one of them. No, that job is already being done by the accuser of the brethren, satan. The Holy Spirit was sent to point out one single extremely important sin, not believing in Jesus! He convicts the heart of people who refuse to believe in Jesus, so that they might turn from their unbelief and be declared righteous. Once a person does this, there is no need to point out any other sins. Read on to see why.
